I do not know anyone who has built their own 220v EV service.  There are a number of commercial units for sale and if you are knowledgeable you can pull a permit and do the install yourself to save some $.

The issue with building your own service equipment is the electronic circuitry in black box which manages the handshake with the car's charging system.  I do not know of anyone who has done their own.  There has been discussion of the issue on the EV Discussion list, www.evdl.org and you might find information on the DIY Electric Car list, www.diyelectriccar.com .

Hi Iain,

John Holmes has experience with open source EVSE chargers.  Can customize to your personal needs.  If you don't know John, email me at jstanden@ucalgary.ca and I will get you in touch.
