I started selling electric scooters and bicycle conversion kits here on Salt Spring four years ago.

The scooters that were available in year one were not quite up to the challenge of some of Salt Spring's finest hills. We went through a period of transition as we tried different models and suppliers.

We've settled on two main suppliers - one for scooters with a full line-up of models and colours, and one for electric bicycle conversion kits.

The best all-around balance between motor power, battery capacity and cost brings the cost of a good bicycle conversion kit (plus the cost of the bicycle) very close to the cost of a good scooter, and I sell a larger number of scooters, I believe, for that reason.

We have a number of scooter riders who use the scooters as their primary and sometimes only means of personal transportation. One owner had 8500km on his bike this time last year.

I have a fantasy of calling up all my customers for a tally of their current odometer readings - I think it would be a respectable distance - and not a drop of petroleum involved.

UBC's AMAZING ELECTRIC BEETLE

And here we have a group of UBC students setting off on a cross Canada trip in their electric VW beetle. They are claiming 185 miles per charge travelling at up to 60 mph.!!!

Their Beetle Electric has Li batteries and an AC motor. A diary of development of the EV and trip progress is at: http://www.ubcecc.com/blog/page/1.
I found it most interesting to start at page 8 and follow the posts chronologically.

I saw the Tesla on the ferry Fulford to Swartz - yellow - very sharp. Can we find out who owns it and invite them to show it off at an electric car rally? Say Oct 30 (last market day) at the Fire Station in Ganges?

THE TESLA ELECTRIC SPORTS CAR

The Tesla, the wild electric sports car; a challenger to the Porsche was
released in 2007.
A report from VEVA (Vancouver Electric Vehicle Association),
coming courtesy of Chris Dixon, states that there are three of these beauties in SW British Columbia and one of them is on SALT SPRING! You might like to keep an eye out for it cruising our windy roads.
If you are not familiar with the TESLA, here is a link to the site: http://www.teslamotors.com/roadster

And here is a review of the latest Tesla sport roadster:
