Do you need help with harvesting a fruit crop this season? After two years of tent-caterpillars, this year's apple and plum blossoms are looking so promising that Molly Murphy, along with Simone Cazabone of SS Community Services, is reviving a "gleaning" project she started in 2011 and 2012 that also included workshops on grafting and pruning (too late for that this year) and preserving.
In those years an eager group of gleaners and enough generous tree-caretakers willing to share their bounty and/or not let it go to waste cooperated and shared a bounty of fruit with plenty to go around. On two days of each week during the harvest, Molly would put a call out to everyone once the plums started ripening. Those with fruit to share emailed her and the group set a time -- on a Thursday or Sunday that year --. which worked for the host. Molly then contacted the list of volunteer fruit-pickers who, along with others they invited, brought ladders, bags, boxes and their enthusiasm to pick whichever trees needed cleaning.
The bounty: one third of the fruit to the hosts, one third to the pickers, and one third to the food bank or other needy community members. That's where this year, Simone Cazabone has stepped into the picture (she coordinates a half-acre market garden plot at Community Services and provides to the food bank).
This year there may some preserving workshops in late summer and perhaps also a bud-grafting workshop in mid-summer. We will share that information as we receive it.
Please help spread the word. If you know anyone with an orchard who you know could use some help or is willing to share in their abundance please contact Molly Murphy directly at email@example.com
